Fernandes Backs Carrick After United’s Fourth Straight Win

Midfielder Credits Interim Boss for Sparking Turnaround, Reveals He Gave Carrick Advice During Previous Stint

Bruno Fernandes has thrown his full support behind interim manager Michael Carrick, labeling him a potential “great manager” following Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham on Saturday.

The win, sealed by a late Fernandes strike after Bryan Mbeumo’s first-half opener, marked a fourth consecutive victory under Carrick since he stepped in last month. It also lifted United into the Champions League places, just two points behind third-place Aston Villa.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Fernandes admitted the performance wasn’t perfect but pointed to a clear shift in atmosphere and responsibility since Carrick’s arrival.

“When we win games, everything looks brighter. This is football,” Fernandes said. “I think Michael came in with the right idea of giving the players the freedom to take responsibility on the pitch.”

In a revealing moment, the Portuguese midfielder disclosed that he had even offered Carrick guidance during the coach’s previous caretaker spell in 2021. “I think he remembers what I told him the last time he was manager,” Fernandes said with a smile. “I think Michael could be a great manager, and he’s just shown it.”

Fernandes emphasized that Carrick’s deep history with the club—having won every major honor there as a player—resonates deeply within the squad. “He knows what it means for these fans and how much is needed to win at this football club,” he added.

The victory was straightforward against a Spurs side that played over an hour with ten men after captain Cristian Romero’s rash red card. While United weren’t at their fluent best, the result further solidified the new-found belief under Carrick and piled pressure on opposite number Thomas Frank.

“We hope we can help him even more,” Fernandes concluded, “so everyone can see we are good players. That’s why we are at Man Utd.”
