24-minute musical spectacle overshadows Chelsea’s 3-0 triumph over PSG, while post-match brawl steals headlines
Sunday’s Club World Cup final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain will be remembered more for its off-field drama than the Blues’ dominant 3-0 victory, as FIFA controversially ignored its own rules to accommodate a marathon halftime show before a post-match brawl erupted between both teams.
The global governing body waived Law 7 of the game – which mandates halftime intervals not exceed 15 minutes – to allow a 24-minute Super Bowl-style spectacle featuring J Balvin, Doja Cat, Tems, Emmanuel Kelly and a surprise appearance by Coldplay’s Chris Martin. While the star-powered performance dazzled some, many fans criticized the extended break as “utter woke nonsense” on social media, with one supporter tweeting: “Having a halftime show during this Club World Cup final feels so weird.”

The drama continued after full-time when PSG manager Luis Enrique appeared to strike Chelsea’s João Pedro during a heated confrontation that began with the Brazilian forward clashing with Gianluigi Donnarumma and Achraf Hakimi.
Video footage shows the Spanish coach making contact with Pedro’s face before being restrained by Presnel Kimpembe, sparking a mass confrontation involving nearly a dozen players.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca stormed onto the pitch to separate his squad, while the spectacle of former US President Donald Trump inserting himself into Chelsea’s trophy celebrations added another surreal layer to an already chaotic evening at MetLife Stadium.
The incidents overshadowed what should have been a triumphant night for Chelsea, who controlled proceedings from start to finish with goals from Cole Palmer (2) and Nicolas Jackson. Football purists will question whether FIFA’s entertainment-first approach compromised the sport’s integrity, while disciplinary committees now face the unenviable task of untangling the post-match melee.
