Fletcher Hails Sesko Breakthrough in Frustrating United Draw at Burnley

Caretaker Boss Pins Hopes on Striker’s Double as Top-Four Hopes Fade After Another Stalemate

Manchester United caretaker manager Darren Fletcher hopes Benjamin Sesko’s long-awaited breakthrough can spark a revival for the struggling striker after his two-goal performance in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Burnley.

The £74 million signing, who had scored just twice in 17 games before the trip to Turf Moor, delivered two composed second-half finishes to turn the match around after an Ayden Heaven own goal had given Burnley the lead. However, Jaidon Anthony’s stunning late equalizer denied United victory and extended their winless run in the league.

“I was so happy for him,” Fletcher said of Sesko. “We presented a video showing his movement and his goals yesterday, just showing how it is coming. He did that tonight and scored two great goals. Hopefully he can kick on from that now.”

Despite the personal milestone for Sesko, the result was another blow to United’s fading Champions League aspirations. The Red Devils have won just once in their last six league matches and dropped to seventh in the table, two points off the top four.

Fletcher, who will remain in charge for Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Brighton, rued missed opportunities and a disallowed Lisandro Martínez goal. “For me the fact we have drawn is a massive disappointment,” he said. “We created more than enough to win the game.”

With the club reportedly seeking an interim manager for the remainder of the season—with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick among the candidates—the pressure is mounting at Old Trafford. For now, Fletcher will cling to the hope that Sesko’s Turf Moor double is the start of something, not just another false dawn in a turbulent campaign.
