Despite a dramatic win over Girona, the Barcelona coach was left confused by his dismissal, insisting he was only “applauding to cheer on my team.”
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was left seeking answers after being sent off during his team’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Girona on Saturday, expressing bewilderment at a decision that saw him dismissed for applauding.

The match will be remembered for Ronald Araujo’s stoppage-time winner, but the post-match discussion was dominated by the manager’s red card. “I didn’t do anything against anyone,” Flick stated post-match. “I applauded [Frenkie] de Jong on the first card, and on the second, I don’t know why he gave it to me.”
Flick revealed he tried to get an explanation from referee Jesús Gil Manzano to no avail. “The referee didn’t want to talk to me, he left and I accept it. He’s the referee,” Flick said, adding, “I would never do anything against anyone. I didn’t say anything against the referee. I applauded to cheer on my team.”
The sending-off capped a chaotic night where Flick had already made bold moves, including using defender Araujo as a makeshift striker—a gamble that paid off with the winning goal. While the victory returns Barcelona to winning ways, the manager’s suspension and his confusion over the decision now cast a shadow ahead of the next fixture.
