Flick Sticks with Szczesny for UCL and El Clásico Despite Ter Stegen’s Strong Return

Barcelona Boss Praises Squad Depth After Comeback Win, Hints at Lopez Role Against Milan

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has confirmed that Wojciech Szczęsny will remain the starting goalkeeper for their crucial Champions League clash against AC Milan on Tuesday and next weekend’s high-stakes El Clásico against Real Madrid—even after Marc-André ter Stegen’s impressive return in Saturday’s 2-1 comeback win over relegated Real Valladolid.

Ter Stegen, making his first appearance in seven months, delivered a solid performance, but Flick made it clear that Szczęsny, the summer signing from Juventus, remains his first choice for the big games ahead.

“We’ll see about Marc—he did well today—but Szczęsny will play in the Champions League and against Real Madrid,” Flick told reporters after the match.

The German coach rotated heavily, making nine changes to his starting lineup to manage fatigue ahead of a grueling week. Despite a sluggish first half that saw Valladolid take the lead, second-half goals from Raphinha and Fermín López sealed the win, keeping Barça atop La Liga.

Flick admitted the changes disrupted rhythm but praised his squad’s resilience. “I’m not disappointed. When you make that many changes, it’s not easy—these are young players. I believe in them,” he said. “I was able to rest key players and give others minutes. There were mistakes, but Araújo, Christensen, and Ter Stegen stood out.”

He also singled out López, suggesting the midfielder could feature against Milan: “He’s a player who always has a chance to start. He’s versatile and brings energy.”

With three points secured, Flick was satisfied but now shifts focus to the bigger tests ahead. “Mission accomplished,” he said—but Barcelona’s real challenges are just beginning.
