German Media Slam “Almost Liverpool Player” as Reds Close In on €150m Deal
Florian Wirtz endured a night to forget as Germany fell 2-1 to Portugal in the Nations League semi-finals—just as speculation over his blockbuster move to Liverpool reaches fever pitch.
The 22-year-old playmaker, widely expected to become Liverpool’s record signing in a deal worth around €150m (£127m), opened the scoring for Germany with a slick one-two with Joshua Kimmich. But his moment of brilliance was overshadowed by a muted overall performance, drawing heavy criticism from his homeland’s media.
German outlets were ruthless in their assessments, with BILD, Sport1, and Sky Germany all handing Wirtz a dismal 3/10 rating. BILD labeled him “barely visible” in the first half, while Sport1 claimed he “disappeared” when his team needed him most. Sky Germany noted the absence of his usual creative partner, Jamal Musiala, but still deemed his display “disappointing.”
Silent Nod Hints at Anfield Future
Despite the backlash, Wirtz remains one of Europe’s most sought-after talents. Liverpool have already seen two bids rejected by Bayer Leverkusen, but confidence is growing that a third offer could finally seal the deal.
The transfer talk followed Wirtz off the pitch, too. When questioned by The Daily Mail‘s Lewis Steele about his impending move to Anfield, the young star didn’t speak—but his subtle nod spoke volumes.
While some may argue the criticism was overly harsh, others suspect it stems from frustration over Germany losing a generational talent to the Premier League. Bayern Munich had long been considered frontrunners for his signature, but Liverpool’s persistence—and new boss Arne Slot’s persuasion—appear to have won the race.
For now, Wirtz will hope to silence his doubters on the pitch—whether in a Germany shirt or, very soon, a Liverpool one.
