Pundits Back England Outcast as Amorim’s Struggles Continue at Crisis Club
Manchester United’s turbulent season could take another unexpected turn, with broadcaster Richard Keys boldly suggesting Gareth Southgate as the ideal candidate to replace under-fire manager Rúben Amorim this summer. The controversial claim comes as the Portuguese coach’s disastrous tenure leaves United languishing in 14th – their worst-ever Premier League position.
Speaking on beIN SPORTS, Keys argued: “Would you trust Amorim with another £250m rebuild after what we’ve seen? Gareth Southgate understands modern players – he’s a master of manipulation and motivation.” Co-pundit Andy Gray conceded the embattled Amorim appears out of his depth, with his 38% win rate making him statistically one of United’s least successful managers.
The debate highlights United’s deepening identity crisis. Amorim arrived with pedigree after winning two Liga Portugal titles with Sporting CP, but has failed to translate that success to England. Meanwhile, Southgate remains a free agent after stepping down as England boss following Euro 2024, where he led the Three Lions to back-to-back European Championship finals.
Though criticized for conservative tactics, Southgate’s man-management skills and relationship with United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe make him a surprise contender. Ratcliffe had previously considered the 53-year-old last summer before ultimately retaining Erik ten Hag – only to sack the Dutchman months later when Amorim’s appointment backfired spectacularly.
With United’s hierarchy facing yet another fork in the road, the club’s next move could define their future. Do they stick with Amorim’s failing project, gamble on Southgate’s leadership qualities, or look elsewhere entirely? As the Theatre of Dreams threatens to become a house of horrors, the pressure is on to make the right call.
