Liverpool Star Nearing Contract Renewal Amid Transfer Rumors
Real Madrid has reportedly turned down the chance to sign Liverpool’s defensive stalwart Virgil van Dijk, despite his agents offering the Dutch international for a free transfer in the summer of 2025.
The Spanish outlet Relevo claims that van Dijk’s representatives approached Real Madrid with a proposal to bolster their backline, an area where the club has struggled with injuries to players like Éder Militão and David Alaba. However, Los Blancos opted against pursuing the 33-year-old, citing a preference for younger options better suited to their long-term plans.
Despite Madrid’s rejection, van Dijk appears close to securing a contract extension at Liverpool. With his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, the Netherlands captain remains calm about his future.
When asked about contract updates after Liverpool’s recent 2-2 draw, van Dijk told Sky Sports: “Nothing. I don’t think so, but I am calm about it, like I said months ago. We’ll see what happens in the future.” He emphasized that his focus is on Liverpool’s upcoming matches, including a Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham.
Van Dijk has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s defense since joining the club in 2018, and new manager Arne Slot has been vocal about the player’s exceptional qualities. Slot, who took over from Jurgen Klopp this season, praised van Dijk’s game intelligence, physical attributes, and leadership.
“I was impressed from the first session,” Slot said. “He’s big, strong, fast, and his ability in possession is incredible. He’s one of the best players in the world in his position, and he leads the team from start to finish.”
Liverpool’s strong form under Slot—currently leading the Premier League by six points—has been a testament to van Dijk’s influence. While contract uncertainty looms over other stars like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, van Dijk’s potential renewal could offer stability as the Reds push for silverware this season.
