Beloved striker and brother perish in Spain just days after wedding, leaving behind wife and three children
The football community is in shock after Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre, were killed in a horrific car crash in northwest Spain early this morning. The 28-year-old Portuguese international, who married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso less than two weeks ago, leaves behind three young children.

The accident occurred around 12:40 AM near Zamora when their vehicle veered off the A-52 highway and burst into flames, according to Spanish emergency services. Witnesses reported the car was fully engulfed, with the fire spreading to nearby vegetation.
Liverpool FC released an emotional statement: “We are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club requests privacy for Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and staff as they process this unimaginable loss.”

Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 for £40 million, scored 62 goals for the Reds and was widely regarded as one of football’s most clinical finishers. Teammates and rivals alike paid tribute, with Jamie Carragher calling him “the best finisher I’ve seen at Liverpool” and Cristiano Ronaldo sharing heartfelt condolences: “It doesn’t make sense… Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre.”
Wolves, where Jota starred for three seasons, expressed profound grief: “Diogo was adored by our fans… The memories he created will never be forgotten.”
As tributes pour in from across the sport, the football world mourns not just an extraordinary player, but a devoted family man whose life was cut heartbreakingly short.
