Forest Axe Nuno Espirito Santo After Rocky Start and Boardroom Rift

The Portuguese boss becomes the first Premier League managerial casualty of the season, following a public breakdown in relations with the club’s ownership.

Nottingham Forest have confirmed the dismissal of head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, just weeks into the new Premier League season. The announcement, made in the early hours of Tuesday morning, brings a sudden end to a tenure that was once celebrated but had recently soured.

The decision follows weeks of growing tension between Nuno and club owner Evangelos Marinakis, exacerbated by a frustrating transfer window and a poor start to the campaign. The club’s statement struck a respectful tone, thanking Nuno for his “very successful era” and highlighting his “pivotal role” in the previous season, which “will forever be remembered fondly.”

However, behind the diplomatic language lay a relationship that had fractured. The rift became public before a ball was even kicked this season, when Nuno voiced his severe frustrations to Sky Sports. “We are very far – very, very far – from where we should be,” he said, criticising the club’s lack of preparation and planning in the transfer market. He admitted to being “very worried” about the task ahead.

This public outburst is believed to have severely damaged his already strained relationship with Marinakis. Nuno himself recently acknowledged the change, stating, “Our relationship has changed. It’s not so close… It’s not good. I think everyone at the club should be together, but it’s not the reality.”

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the club is already looking to the future, with former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou among the candidates being considered to take the helm at the City Ground. For now, the search begins as Forest seek a new leader to steady the ship.
