Jean-Philippe Mateta’s Early Goal Sends Hosts to Semi-Finals Amid Post-Match Clashes

France’s grudge match against Argentina ended in chaos as Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the decisive goal, leading the hosts to a 1-0 victory and a spot in the Olympic semi-finals. France will now join Spain, Morocco, and Egypt in the last four.

The game in Bordeaux, marked by high tensions, concluded with players and staff from both sides clashing on the pitch and continuing their confrontations down the tunnel.

Crystal Palace striker Mateta netted the only goal five minutes into the match, heading in Michael Olise’s corner at the near post. This goal proved enough for France, coached by Thierry Henry, to secure their semi-final spot where they will face Egypt.

This match was the first encounter between the nations since Argentina players were recorded singing racist chants about their French counterparts while celebrating their Copa America victory in mid-July. The chants, which included racist and homophobic insults targeting France’s star striker Kylian Mbappe and others, prompted FIFA to launch an investigation.

The Argentine team faced a hostile reception, with the crowd jeering their national anthem, reflecting the lingering animosity from the 2022 World Cup final, which Argentina won on penalties. Thierry Henry revealed that midfielder Enzo Millot, who had been substituted late in the game, was shown a red card after the final whistle.

“He wasn’t on the pitch. Maybe you get sent off because you get a second yellow card to stop someone running through on goal, not when you are on the bench. I am really not happy about that,” Henry told broadcaster France 3.

Argentina, led by Javier Mascherano, missed key opportunities through Giuliano Simeone and Julian Alvarez. Their exit means that the men’s football gold medal will not be won by a Latin American team for the first time since Cameroon’s triumph in Sydney in 2000.

France could have secured a more comfortable victory, but a late second goal by Olise was disallowed due to a foul in the build-up.
