Funke Akindele Reflects on Journey from N35 Million Film to Billion-Naira Success

Nollywood’s box office queen credits fans and faith for her record-breaking career.

Nollywood powerhouse Funke Akindele is taking a heartfelt look back at her remarkable journey, following her historic achievement as a billionaire at the box office. The actress and filmmaker, often hailed as the industry’s box-office queen, recently turned to Instagram to share a moment of gratitude and reflection.

Her post highlighted the humble beginnings of her cinema success, pointing to her 2011 film, The Return of Jenifa, which grossed 35 million Naira and was the highest-grossing movie of that year. “Can’t believe how far I’ve come… Big thanks to EVERYBODY who supported me on this journey!” she wrote, giving a special shout-out to her fans: “You guys rock! And still winning!!!”

Since reaching the billion-naira milestone, Akindele has consistently opened up about the passion and perseverance behind her success. She describes filmmaking as her true love and expresses profound thanks for the chance to share her work with her devoted “fanmily.”

Her path to stardom was not without its struggles. Akindele has spoken candidly about the hard times she endured before her rise, counting herself as a “testimony” to self-belief. She faced numerous challenges but learned to stand tall and now uses her experience to encourage others.

“Nobody made me a star, only God,” she has said, recalling how the iconic Jenifa brand was born and how an early mentor in the industry encouraged her to develop it, even providing financing. While admitting her journey “wasn’t always pretty,” she emphasizes that it was worth every step, saying she is proud to have emerged from a place of “hustle and hard work.”

Celebrating 27 years in the industry last December, Akindele credited divine favor and relentless effort for her longevity. She shared her formula for continuous growth, noting that it happens outside comfort zones. “Hard work, consistency, and focus lead to continuous growth,” she advised, adding that as a perfectionist director, she strives to ensure every detail is right—a testament to the dedication that turned a 35 million Naira debut into a billion-naira legacy.
