Highest-Grossing Opening Day Film in Nigerian Cinema History
Funke Akindele’s latest film, Everybody Loves Jenifa (ELJ), has made history by becoming Nollywood’s highest-grossing opening-day movie. Released last Friday, the highly anticipated film pulled in ₦45.2 million on its debut day, with 9,409 cinema admissions across Nigeria.
Breaking Records Despite Challenges
The Nigerian Box Office announced the milestone on Saturday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Everybody Loves Jenifa has surpassed the previous record held by Akindele’s 2023 blockbuster, A Tribe Called Judah (ATCJ).
“Everybody Loves Jenifa shattered box office records yesterday, achieving the biggest opening day for a Nollywood film with ₦45.2M!” the post read. Remarkably, this record was achieved despite the film not screening at Genesis Cinemas and missing most of the day at Silverbird Cinemas.
The entertainment company Film One also confirmed the news on Instagram, highlighting that the movie not only set a Nollywood record but also recorded the highest admission count for a 2024 release.

A Billion-Naira Ambition
Everybody Loves Jenifa, part of the beloved Jenifa franchise, features an all-star cast, including Nancy Isime, Jackie Appiah, Falz, Patience Ozokwor, and Stan Nze. The film’s popularity has fueled speculation that it could match or even exceed the total box office haul of A Tribe Called Judah, which grossed over ₦1 billion in 2023.
Akindele has expressed confidence in the film’s potential to reach this milestone. She also issued a stern warning against piracy, emphasizing that offenders would face arrest.
Legacy of the Jenifa Franchise
The Jenifa series, which began in 2008, has resonated with audiences for its humor and relatable storytelling. With this latest installment, Akindele has not only entertained fans but also solidified her status as a leading force in Nollywood.
As box office numbers continue to roll in, Everybody Loves Jenifa is poised to cement its legacy as one of the most successful films in Nigerian cinema history.
