Eight-Year Tenure Ends After Heartbreaking Loss in Berlin
Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager in the wake of their 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
England reached their second consecutive European Championship final under Southgate but once again fell short at the final hurdle. The match, held in Berlin, saw Nico Williams give Spain an early lead, which was later equalized by England’s substitute Cole Palmer. However, a late goal from Mikel Oyarzabal secured Spain’s record fourth Euros title.
Speaking immediately after the match, Southgate initially refrained from making a decision on his future, with his contract set to expire in December. However, he has now confirmed his decision to step down after eight years in charge.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all,” Southgate said in an official statement released by the FA. “But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”
Southgate joined the FA in 2011 and became England men’s manager in 2016, leading the team in 102 games. “I could not have had anyone better alongside me than Steve Holland. He is one of the most talented coaches of his generation, and has been immense,” he added.
Reflecting on his tenure, Southgate expressed pride in the players and the young talent in the squad. “The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent, and they can win the trophy we all dream of. I am so proud of them, and I hope we get behind the players and the team at St. George’s Park and the FA who strive every day to improve English football,” he said.
He also extended special thanks to the backroom staff and the fans. “My special thanks go to the backroom staff who have provided the players and me with unstinting support over the last eight years. Their hard work and commitment inspired me every day. We have the best fans in the world, and their support has meant the world to me. I’m an England fan and I always will be.”
Southgate concluded his statement with gratitude, saying, “Thank you, England – for everything.”
Following Southgate’s resignation, former Chelsea manager Graham Potter has emerged as the bookmakers’ clear favourite to succeed him.
