Sky Pundit Senses Manager’s Frustration After Explosive Comments, Fears Situation is “Never Usually Good”
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville believes manager Ruben Amorim is “starting to unleash” his frustrations in public due to a growing rift with the club’s leadership, drawing parallels with Enzo Maresca’s recent exit from Chelsea.
Neville’s analysis came in response to Amorim’s pointed post-match comments following United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds on Sunday, where the Portuguese boss stressed he was “the manager, not just the coach” and hinted at deeper unrest.
“It looks to me like he’s not happy with something within the hierarchy,” Neville said on Sky Sports. “When these press conferences of this ilk start, it’s never usually good.”
Amorim had specifically referenced Neville during his outburst, stating: “If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticisms of everything, we need to change the club.” Neville took the remark in stride, noting it’s a common tactic for managers under pressure, but insisted his recent critiques have been fair.
The Sky pundit suggested the core issue is likely a broken promise in the transfer market. Despite a £200 million summer spend, Amorim is understood to want reinforcements this month, particularly a powerful central midfielder and a specialist wing-back.
“He probably wants a midfield player… and Manchester United do need a central midfield player of force, of power, of presence,” Neville explained. “Maybe he’s been told in the last week or two that he’s not getting any players.”
Neville compared the simmering tension to the situation that preceded Maresca’s Chelsea departure, warning that public friction between a manager and the board rarely ends well. For now, Amorim remains in charge, but his public airing of grievances has cast a cloud of uncertainty over his future and the club’s January plans.
