Genoa Dismisses Patrick Vieira After Winless Start

Club owner’s public vote of confidence proves short-lived as Arsenal legend’s reign ends after just 37 games.

In a decisive move, Italian club Genoa has parted ways with manager Patrick Vieira, ending his tenure after less than a year. The decision comes as the club finds itself in a deep crisis, rooted to the bottom of Serie A without a single victory this season.

The Frenchman, a legend from his playing days with Arsenal and the French national team, took charge last November and initially steadied the ship, guiding Genoa to a 13th-place finish. However, a disastrous start to the new campaign has seen the 49-year-old’s time in charge cut short.

Vieira’s final match was a painful 2-0 home defeat to Cremonese on Wednesday night. The loss seemingly forced the club’s hand, coming just days after owner Dan Sucu had publicly backed his manager. On Tuesday, Sucu had insisted, “Here we do not have a plan B, C or D. I have complete confidence in Vieira.” That confidence, however, evaporated within a matter of days.

In an official statement, the club announced the change, thanking Vieira and his staff “for the seriousness and professionalism demonstrated throughout their work.” The club has temporarily handed the reins to Roberto Murgita, who will be assisted by club veteran Domenico Criscito.

Vieira leaves having overseen 37 matches, with a record of ten wins, twelve draws, and fifteen defeats. His dismissal leaves Genoa as the only team in the league still searching for their first win, tasked with finding a new leader to orchestrate a great escape.
