Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has launched 33 new tractors and distributed N380 million to support climate-smart farming.
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has commissioned 33 new tractors and distributed N380 million in cheques to local groups. This support is for climate-smart agricultural activities under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) program.
Governor Alia, who has already contributed N1 billion to the ACReSAL program, emphasized his commitment to supporting this initiative for the benefit of Benue residents. He also announced the creation of ACReSAL as a new state agency to help transfer knowledge and skills.
“Benue, like many other states, faces challenges such as high poverty, environmental fragility, conflicts, resource degradation, low agricultural productivity, and climate risks. Solving these requires collective efforts,” Alia said.
The governor urged the beneficiaries to use the resources wisely and stated that the 33 new tractors would benefit over 33,000 households annually.
Dr. Joy Iganya Ajene, the Senior Environmental Specialist at the World Bank Nigeria office and team leader for the ACReSAL project, said the team visited Benue to assess and support the program. She noted that the program has achieved significant success so far.
