Granit Xhaka Not for Sale: Leverkusen Boss Ten Hag Slams Sunderland Transfer Rumors

Swiss Midfielder “Too Important” as Bundesliga Giants Resist Losing Another Key Player

Bayer Leverkusen manager Erik ten Hag has issued a firm hands-off warning to Sunderland over Granit Xhaka, insisting the Bundesliga club cannot afford to lose another key player this summer.

The Swiss midfielder, 32, has been linked with a surprise move to newly promoted Sunderland, with reports suggesting his agent has already agreed to terms in principle with the Black Cats. But Ten Hag, who took over from Xabi Alonso in May, has dismissed the rumors and made it clear Xhaka remains a vital part of his plans.

“We Won’t Let Any More Players Go”

Leverkusen have already seen three key stars depart this summer—playmaker Florian Wirtz and defender Jeremie Frimpong joined Liverpool, while center-back Jonathan Tah moved to Bayern Munich. Ten Hag insists the club cannot afford to lose another leader.

“The agent can say anything. But this club has already lost three important players,” Ten Hag told German media. “We won’t let any more players go—that’s not possible. That would neglect the structure and the culture of the squad.”

He added: “Granit is a leader, he has signed here for five years and has three years left. He’s too important for us to let him go.”

Xhaka’s Stellar Leverkusen Impact

Since joining from Arsenal in 2023, Xhaka has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic invincible Bundesliga title win, their German Cup triumph, and a run to the Europa League final. The Swiss captain has made 99 appearances, contributing six goals and nine assists, while providing crucial leadership in midfield.

With Sunderland eager to bolster their squad for their Premier League return, they may have to look elsewhere—unless they can tempt Leverkusen with an offer too big to refuse. But for now, Ten Hag’s message is clear: Xhaka is staying put.
