Controversial critic vows legal action against bank, claims armed operatives blindfolded and abducted him
Nigerian social media activist VeryDarkMan has made shocking new allegations about his recent arrest, accusing GTBank of complicity in what he describes as a “hostage situation” before his detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The outspoken critic, recently released on bail amid public protests, shared a disturbing account of his ordeal in a viral video. He claimed the incident began during a routine bank visit to investigate a mysterious ₦200,000 loan allegedly taken out unknowingly by his mother.
“I was leaving the bank premises when their security blocked my path for no reason,” VeryDarkMan recounted with visible anger. “What happened next was like a movie scene – they used vehicles to trap mine, fired gunshots into the air, then blindfolded and dragged me away in another car.”
The activist, known for his fiery social commentary, saved his harshest words for GTBank: “Five full minutes they held me hostage inside that bank. I’m taking them to court – they must explain this illegal detention.”
His claims have added fuel to an already controversial case that saw celebrities and activists rally for his release from EFCC custody. While the financial crimes commission hasn’t addressed the abduction allegations, banking security experts express skepticism about the involvement of bank staff in such an operation.
Legal analysts note that if substantiated, the allegations could lead to serious consequences for both the bank and security operatives involved. “Any detention without proper authorization constitutes false imprisonment under Nigerian law,” explains Lagos-based attorney Bimpe Adeyemo. “The gunfire and blindfolding, if proven, would elevate this to criminal kidnapping charges.”
As the story develops, GTBank has yet to respond publicly to the allegations. Meanwhile, VeryDarkMan’s supporters have begun circulating the video testimony online, with #GTBankExplain now trending across social media platforms. The activist promised more revelations would come as he prepares what he calls “a landmark lawsuit” against the financial institution.
