Guardiola Confused by VAR Decision in Manchester City’s Dramatic 2-1 Win Over Wolves

Stones’ late header seals the win as Guardiola questions VAR intervention in controversial decision.

Pep Guardiola expressed his confusion over the controversy surrounding John Stones’ stoppage-time winner, which secured a dramatic 2-1 victory for Manchester City against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Stones’ powerful header past Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa was initially ruled out due to Bernardo Silva being deemed offside and obstructing Sa’s view, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola admitted he was baffled by the initial disallowing of the goal. “I didn’t understand it,” Guardiola told BBC Sport. “The linesman made the call, but Bernardo wasn’t disturbing the position. In modern football, keepers are so protected, but in this case, Sa had a perfect view.”

Despite the controversy, Guardiola praised his team’s performance, particularly their resilience against a physically strong Wolves side. “We played really well,” Guardiola told Sky Sports. “The commitment was there, and the players who came on made a huge impact. It was a tough game, but we deserved the win.”

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, however, suggested there may be subconscious bias in decision-making favoring top clubs like Manchester City. While O’Neil clarified that he doesn’t believe there’s a deliberate agenda against his side, he noted that high-profile teams often receive more favorable decisions in critical moments.

“Manchester City scoring a last-minute winner is a bigger moment than Wolves scoring one,” O’Neil remarked in his post-match press conference. “There’s no conspiracy, but perhaps subconsciously, officials might be more inclined to give the decision to City. It’s human nature.”

Despite the controversy, Manchester City’s victory keeps them firmly in the title race, while Wolves will be left to reflect on a spirited performance that ended in frustration.
