Guardiola Defends Manchester City Players Amid Toughest Run

City Boss Rejects Player Blame, Insists Solutions Will Come

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has dismissed claims that his team’s ongoing struggles can be pinned on his players, calling such accusations “completely unfair.” As the Premier League champions prepare for their Boxing Day clash against Everton, Guardiola remains optimistic about turning the season around.

City are enduring a torrid spell, with just one win in their last 12 matches across all competitions. This slump has seen them knocked out of the Carabao Cup, while their Champions League campaign hangs by a thread. In the Premier League, City sit 17th in the form table, 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

Despite the challenges, Guardiola is confident his side can recover. Speaking ahead of the Everton match, he emphasized his belief in the team’s resilience and their ability to overcome the crisis.

Guardiola’s Perspective

“I’m so positive,” Guardiola said. “Of course, there are doubts—whether a decision was right or if we need to change something—but I know we can find a solution. We’ve turned the ordinary into the extraordinary in the past, and we can do it again.”

He added, “People thought we’d win the Premier League by November, as if it’s routine. Winning consistently is extraordinary. Now, losing feels extraordinary, but it happens for a reason. Even when we were winning, I never took it for granted.”

Refusing to Blame the Players

Guardiola firmly rejected the idea of blaming his squad for City’s poor form, instead pointing to broader issues that need addressing.

“It would be easy to say the players are the reason, but that would be completely unfair,” he explained. “They’re trying—they want to get back to winning ways—but sometimes it just doesn’t happen. There are many factors at play, and I won’t shift the blame onto them.”

Guardiola also reflected on the club’s unprecedented success under his leadership, having won six league titles in seven seasons. “Why should it happen now? There are things since the start of the season that haven’t gone well. Most of the responsibility lies with us, and we have to fix it.”

Focus on Everton

City’s Boxing Day opponents, Everton, come into the match on a three-game unbeaten streak, following impressive draws against Arsenal and Chelsea. For Guardiola’s men, the match offers a chance to halt their slide and regain some momentum in a challenging season.

While City’s title defense may already seem unlikely, Guardiola’s steadfast belief in his players and his optimism about finding solutions will be key to how they navigate the months ahead.
