Guardiola Praises Incoming United Manager Ruben Amorim, But Questions If He Can Rival Manchester City’s Dominance

Sporting Lisbon sends off Amorim with 4-1 win over City, as Guardiola reflects on future competition with the Portuguese coach

Pep Guardiola has spoken highly of Ruben Amorim, who is set to take the reins at Manchester United, though he expressed uncertainty about whether the Red Devils can match Manchester City’s level in the future. Amorim, in his final home game as Sporting CP’s manager, led his team to an impressive 4-1 victory over City in the Champions League, highlighted by a hat-trick from Viktor Gyokeres and a missed penalty from City’s Erling Haaland.

The game began with City’s Phil Foden putting the visitors ahead, but Gyokeres equalized just before halftime. The match took a decisive turn early in the second half when Maximiliano Araujo gave Sporting the lead, followed by a penalty conversion from Gyokeres that sealed the win.

When asked about facing Amorim as United’s manager in December, Guardiola admitted he expects a challenge but remains cautious about United’s future potential. “We learn from all the coaches we face. Ruben has done well, but let’s see if he can get United back to their best. I don’t know if they’ll be better than us — only time will tell.”

Amorim, aware of the gap between his own experience and Guardiola’s, was gracious in his remarks. “Two years ago, it was 5-1 to City here,” he noted. “Pep’s miles ahead, but I believe in what we can build at United. We’ll start from a low level, perhaps, but we’ll improve.”

The two managers will face off again on December 15, marking Amorim’s first test against Guardiola as United’s new boss in a match that could offer a glimpse into a future Premier League rivalry.
