Manager Also Addresses Oscar Bobb Speculation and Confirms Rodri Could Return at Sunderland
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola remained tight-lipped on Thursday regarding his club’s reported pursuit of Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo and the growing speculation around winger Oscar Bobb’s future.
When questioned ahead of City’s New Year’s Day trip to face Sunderland, Guardiola offered a typically cryptic response. “What is going to happen is going to happen,” he said. “I don’t have any news. The winter transfer window is completely closed right now.”
Reports indicate City are advancing toward a deal for Semenyo, whose contract contains a £65 million release clause. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund are among several clubs monitoring the situation of 22-year-old Bobb, who could be made available should a move for Semenyo be completed.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, however, is planning for the immediate future with Semenyo in his side. After the forward started in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea, Iraola said he expects him to be available for the Cherries’ next match against league leaders Arsenal on January 3.
“I’m expecting him to be available also in the next game for us,” Iraola stated. “There is a lot of noise around him, but my worry as a coach is that he can keep up the performance level he is having.”
On the injury front, Guardiola delivered positive news, revealing midfield linchpin Rodri could make his return from injury with “a few minutes” at the Stadium of Light. Winger Jeremy Doku is also in contention, though defender John Stones and Bobb remain unavailable.
City face a stern test against a Sunderland side unbeaten at home this season. A victory would cut Arsenal’s lead at the top back to two points. Guardiola acknowledged the challenge, praising Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris for integrating 14 new players so effectively after promotion.
“They have had an incredible season,” Guardiola said. “Being in that position speaks for itself.”
