Manchester City’s Manager Highlights Job Security Amidst Team’s Inconsistent Performance
Pep Guardiola has confidently dismissed any concerns about losing his job at Manchester City, even if they suffer defeat against Real Madrid in their upcoming Champions League play-off. The Spanish manager, who recently extended his contract by two years in November, drew parallels between his role and other professions where job security isn’t typically questioned during tough times.
Manchester City has faced a challenging period, losing 11 of their last 23 matches, which led to a disappointing 22nd place finish in the Champions League group stages. This has set them up for a crucial two-legged match against the 15-time champions, Real Madrid.
Despite these setbacks, Guardiola remains calm and collected. “No,” he stated firmly when asked if he feared dismissal. “I don’t know if a doctor is asked to play the question, or if an architect is asked to play the question, or if a teacher is asked the question. I know that in all the stadiums, they tell me that I’m going to be kicked out the next day, sacked in the morning, when we’re losing. But no, I don’t have this feeling.”
Guardiola’s tenure at City has been marked by remarkable success, which he believes secures his position. “I’m obviously here, and I still have the position, because of what we’ve won in recent years. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t be here,” he reflected.
However, the manager admits uncertainty regarding the team’s current form. “We used to be an ‘incredible machine’ but are not anymore,” Guardiola lamented. He spoke candidly about the unpredictability of the match against Real Madrid, mentioning the team’s inconsistency and the impact of injuries on player selection.
“Always in this type of draws and competitions, I’m so optimistic and calm. We’ll see what happens,” he added, maintaining an optimistic outlook despite the challenges. Guardiola highlighted the importance of consistency, which he feels has been lacking recently but was a hallmark of City’s performance in past years. “What defined that team in the last decade is we are an incredible machine every three days.”
As Manchester City prepares for this critical encounter, Guardiola’s philosophy and leadership will be under scrutiny, but his focus remains on guiding his team through this turbulent time with the same resilience and strategic acumen that has defined his tenure.
