Arsenal See Off Spirited Brentford as Merino and Saka Shine, Yet Lose Mosquera and Rice Ahead of Packed Fixture List
Arsenal extended their lead at the Premier League summit but faced fresh injury concerns after a hard-fought 2-0 win over a determined Brentford side at the Emirates Stadium.
First-half goals from Mikel Merino and Bukayo Saka proved decisive, pushing the Gunners five points clear. However, the victory was marred by the loss of defender Cristhian Mosquera and midfield lynchpin Declan Rice to injuries, casting a shadow ahead of a pivotal run of games.
Arsenal started brightly, and the returning Ben White combined brilliantly with the lively Noni Madueke to break the deadlock. Madueke’s deft release sent White racing down the right, and his pinpoint cross found Merino, who rose above Ethan Pinnock to thump a header down and past goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Brentford responded courageously and nearly levelled immediately, only for Arsenal’s David Raya to pull off a stunning save, tipping Kevin Schade’s powerful header onto the crossbar.
The game’s momentum shifted further when Mosquera, filling in for injured regulars, landed awkwardly and was forced off. Brentford pressed either side of halftime, but Arsenal grew stronger in the final half-hour.
A second blow struck the league leaders as Rice pulled up, clutching his calf, and had to be substituted. Despite Brentford sending on their big names in search of an equalizer, Arsenal sealed the points late on. Merino turned provider, slipping a perfect pass through to Saka, whose shot squirmed under Kelleher’s hand and trickled over the line, ending Brentford’s resistance.
The final whistle confirmed Arsenal’s crucial three points, but the sight of two key players limping off will dominate manager Mikel Arteta’s thoughts as his squad prepares for a demanding schedule.
