Swedish Striker Keeps Future Uncertain Amid £63m “Gentleman’s Agreement” Rumors
Viktor Gyokeres refused to be drawn on speculation linking him with a summer move to Arsenal, despite another electrifying performance for Sporting Lisbon. The Swedish striker netted a hat-trick in Friday’s 3-1 win over Moreirense, taking his astonishing tally to 90 goals in just 96 appearances since joining from Coventry last year.
With Arsenal reportedly eyeing him as a more feasible alternative to Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Gyokeres remained coy when pressed about his future. Asked post-match if he “liked London,” the 26-year-old grinned and replied, “I like Lisbon.”
Reports suggest Sporting have a verbal understanding to let him leave for £63m—well below his £85m release clause—but Gyokeres shut down questions, stating, “I can’t say anything about that. No one can predict what will happen; we enjoy the moment.”
The victory kept Sporting top of Portugal’s Primeira Liga, setting up a tense title race with rivals Benfica. A looming Lisbon derby could be Gyokeres’ last, with Arsenal’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, preparing for a busy window. Manager Mikel Arteta has publicly urged Berta to “spend big,” emphasizing the need for squad depth to compete across multiple competitions.
“At this level, especially in this country, it’s impossible [without quality and availability],” Arteta said recently. “I hope Andrea has ideas, surprises… and the intuition to help us make the right calls.”
For now, Gyokeres’ focus remains on sealing a league title—but Arsenal’s interest ensures his next move will dominate headlines this summer.
