Sporting Stand Firm as Gunners’ Pursuit of Coveted Striker Hangs by a Thread
Arsenal’s long-awaited move for Viktor Gyokeres is teetering on the brink of collapse, with the Swedish striker’s father reportedly left in tears as negotiations with Sporting Lisbon reach a tense impasse.
Despite agreeing on a base fee last week, the deal has stalled over key structural disagreements, leaving Gyokeres—once eager for the move—increasingly resigned to staying in Portugal. Portuguese outlet A Bola reveals that Arsenal have gone silent in talks, with three major sticking points threatening to derail the transfer:
- Bonus Dispute – Sporting demand €10m in easily achievable add-ons, while Arsenal only want €5m.
- Payment Schedule – The Gunners want to spread payments over four installments; Sporting insist on two.
- Training Compensation – The clubs are clashing over who covers solidarity fees owed to Gyokeres’ former youth clubs.
The emotional toll has been severe, with Swedish reports claiming the striker’s father was left “emotionally shaken,” crying from Friday to Saturday as confidence in the deal evaporated.
While Fabrizio Romano insists Arsenal remain “confident,” Sporting president Frederico Varandas refuses to bend, believing the Gunners are using delay tactics to force concessions. With Gyokeres now mentally distancing himself from the move, time is running out—and Arsenal may soon face a painful reality: their top striker target slipping away.
