Haaland’s Milestone Goal Not Enough as Man City Held by Brighton in Title Race Setback

Norwegian Reaches 150 City Goals in Record Time, But Mitoma Strike Earns Seagulls a Valuable Point

Erling Haaland scored a historic 150th goal for Manchester City on Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough to secure victory as Pep Guardiola’s side were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by a resilient Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium.

The Norwegian striker, who netted a first-half penalty, became the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 150 club goals across all competitions. Yet the personal milestone was overshadowed by another stumble in the title race, leaving City five points behind leaders Arsenal.

“We had our chances but could not kill the game,” Guardiola said afterward. “When you don’t do that, you can be punished.”

City, forced into defensive changes due to injuries, endured a nervy start as Brighton created several early opportunities. The breakthrough finally came just before halftime when VAR intervened to award a penalty for a foul on Jérémy Doku, which Haaland calmly converted.

Brighton responded strongly in the second half. Kaoru Mitoma, a constant threat, leveled the score with a superb low strike from outside the box, briefly rattling the crossbar minutes later as the visitors pushed for a shock winner.

The match also featured a sentimental moment as former City midfielder James Milner came off the bench to make his 650th Premier League appearance, moving him within three games of Gareth Barry’s all-time record.

For City, the draw represents another costly slip after their stalemate with Chelsea last weekend. With Arsenal hosting Liverpool on Thursday, Guardiola’s side can only watch as their rivals have a chance to extend the gap at the top.
