The Norwegian striker credits his newborn son for his mental sharpness after scoring his 18th goal of the season in a 1-0 win.
Erling Haaland’s incredible scoring streak continued on Saturday, as his ninth-minute strike proved decisive in a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Manchester City over a stubborn Brentford side. The win, Pep Guardiola’s 250th in the Premier League, was sealed by a moment of typical Haaland brilliance but marred by a first-half injury to key midfielder Rodri.
The Norwegian powerhouse, who has now scored in nine consecutive appearances for club and country, showcased his elite movement by slipping away from defender Sepp van den Berg. He latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Joško Gvardiol and fired a low, powerful shot past goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher.
Despite dominating possession, City found breaking down Brentford’s disciplined low block to be a significant challenge. The home side, fresh from a stunning 3-1 win over Manchester United the previous week, offered little threat, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma largely untroubled throughout the match.
After the game, a reflective Haaland opened up about the source of his current form, giving an unexpected and personal credit. “I have never felt better than I do now,” Haaland told Sky Sports. “With a kid, it makes me even better because I disconnect more than ever… I think I need to give a shout-out to my son.”
He also praised the team’s backroom staff for their preparation against a difficult Brentford side, whom he compared to the famously physical Stoke City teams of old.
The victory lifts City to fifth in the table, just three points behind leaders Liverpool. However, the sight of Rodri being forced off in the 22nd minute with a thigh injury will be a major concern for Guardiola as his team heads into the international break.
