Head Injury Controversy Mars Manchester United’s Early Goal Against Liverpool

The Premier League explains that referee Michael Oliver “did not see” Alexis Mac Allister’s head injury in the build-up to Bryan Mbeumo’s opener, leaving Liverpool furious.

A controversial goal cast a shadow over Manchester United’s bright start at Anfield, as their opening strike against Liverpool came moments after midfielder Alexis Mac Allister lay on the pitch with a head injury.

The incident occurred just two minutes into the match when Mac Allister jumped for a header with United’s Bryan Mbeumo and was accidentally struck in the head by his own teammate, Virgil van Dijk. The Argentine international fell to the ground, but play continued. Mbeumo promptly played on, making a clever run behind a seemingly distracted Liverpool defense to slot the ball home and stun the home crowd.

While United celebrated, medical staff attended to Mac Allister, who required treatment. The controversy stemmed from the decision not to halt play, as protocols typically mandate for head injuries.

The Premier League later explained to Sky Sports that referee Michael Oliver had “not seen the injury and therefore couldn’t stop the game.” This justification was met with skepticism from pundits.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher expressed his surprise, stating, “He was on the floor holding his head… I’m surprised Michael Oliver hasn’t pulled that back.” Former defender Stephen Warnock echoed this on BBC Radio 5 Live, asserting, “Play should still be stopped for a head injury. Manchester United won’t care.”

The disputed goal gave the visitors a dream start, amplifying the pressure on a Liverpool side already suffering from a recent dip in form.
