Henry Delivers Blunt Verdict on Barcelona’s Champions League Hopes

Club Legend Warns “You Can’t Win the Champions League Like This” After Defensive Collapse in Brugge

Barcelona legend Thierry Henry has issued a stark warning to his former club, insisting their chaotic defense makes them incapable of winning the Champions League this season.

The blunt assessment came after Barcelona’s latest defensive implosion, a 3-3 draw against Club Brugge that saw the Spanish giants fall to 11th in the competition’s league phase. The team was repeatedly exposed on the counter-attack, forcing them to fight back from behind three times against the Belgian side.

While Barcelona’s coach, Hansi Flick, remained defiant after the match—vowing, “We won’t change our way of defending”—Henry was unequivocal in his criticism. Speaking on CBS Sports, the former striker pointed to a persistent pattern of disorganization at the back.

“The co-ordination [in defence] is so bad. You can’t win the Champions League like this, it’s very difficult,” Henry stated. He then listed a series of recent matches where the defense has faltered, from the game against PSG to last year’s clash with Benfica.

Expressing his personal conflict, Henry admitted, “It pains me to say that because I don’t want to talk about my old club like that. But you have to call a spade a spade.”

His final warning was clear: the strategy of simply outscoring opponents is no longer viable. “You can’t carry on defending like this,” he said. “Every time hoping to score three or four… not in the modern era of football, you can’t defend like that.”
