Police recover homemade firearm and charms; investigation underway.
A self-proclaimed herbalist, Ismail Usman, known for his unconventional practices in Abuja’s Kuchibuyi Village, landed in critical condition after attempting to test the effectiveness of a self-made “bulletproof” charm. The incident occurred on November 23 when Usman shot himself with a homemade shotgun during the ill-fated experiment.
Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, confirmed the development on Saturday. According to Adeh, officers from the Byazhin Division responded swiftly to a distress call from a local resident, Shandam Michael. Upon arrival, they found Usman gravely injured and immediately rushed him to Kubwa General Hospital for emergency care. He was later transferred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for advanced treatment.
During a subsequent search of Usman’s residence, police recovered the shotgun used in the incident along with an assortment of charms believed to be part of his bulletproof charm-making process.
Adeh disclosed that investigations are ongoing, and Usman is likely to face charges for unlawful possession of firearms and attempted suicide under Section 231 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.
“It’s critical for community members to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly,” Adeh emphasized, urging residents to prioritize safety and cooperation with law enforcement.
The incident highlights the dangers of such reckless experiments and the need for greater awareness regarding the illegal possession and use of firearms.
