The Manchester United striker, deemed surplus to requirements, prioritizes guaranteed playing time and Champions League football, snubbing AC Milan for a loan move to Antonio Conte’s Napoli.
Rasmus Hojlund’s time at Manchester United appears to be over, with the Danish striker finalizing a season-long loan to Napoli after a decisive intervention from manager Antonio Conte.
The move comes as a direct consequence of United’s record-breaking signing of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, which pushed the 22-year-old Hojlund down the pecking order at Old Trafford. Faced with a career crossroads, the forward made it clear that his next club must offer him a central role, not just a place on the bench.
This key demand ultimately swayed his decision. While AC Milan were initially the frontrunners for his signature, Hojlund has opted for a move to Naples. Reports indicate he was convinced by the prospect of leading the line for a Conte-led team, especially with current Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku sidelined by injury, and the added lure of Champions League football.
According to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport, Hojlund was concerned about the fierce competition for a starting spot at Milan, where the attacking roles in their 3-5-2 formation are already hotly contested by stars like Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao.
With Hojlund heading south, Milan have moved quickly to secure an alternative, agreeing a loan deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s powerful Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface.
The proposed deal for Hojlund will see Napoli pay a €5 million loan fee to Manchester United. The two clubs are still negotiating the terms of a potential option to make the move permanent next summer.
For Hojlund, the move represents a chance to reboot his career in a league where he previously excelled with Atalanta, aiming to prove himself as the main man once again.
