Højlund Opens Up on Manchester United Exit: “I Had to Find a Place That Believes in Me”

The Danish striker, now on loan at Napoli, reflects on a “chaotic” but valuable chapter at Old Trafford and embraces a fresh start in Italy.

Danish international Rasmus Højlund has spoken candidly about his recent departure from Manchester United, stating that with new signings arriving, he felt he “had no choice” but to seek a new club to secure the playing time his career demands.

The 21-year-old striker completed a season-long loan move to Italian giants Napoli after finding his opportunities at United increasingly limited. Højlund made 95 appearances for the Reds, scoring 26 goals and even lifting the FA Cup in 2024. However, after a dip in form and the summer arrivals of attacking reinforcements, he saw the writing on the wall.

“My prospects for playing time diminished as they brought in reinforcements for my position,” Højlund explained to TV2 Sport. “With my age and ambitions, I had to find a place where they believe in me, give me a lot of love, and offer a good sporting package. I feel 100 percent that I have found it with Napoli. It’s something I’m really, really looking forward to.”

Despite the struggles of his second season, which yielded just six goals under manager Ruben Amorim, Højlund looks back on his time in Manchester with gratitude, describing it as a period of immense growth despite its “chaotic” nature.

“It has been a really, really good time. I have been happy to play there, and it is a club close to my heart,” he said. “I have gained a lot of experience and toughness. It has given me some good experiences and less good experiences.”

He pointed to specific highlights that he will forever cherish, notably his electrifying first year. “Especially my first year when I became the leading goalscorer and won a trophy. It was really, really special,” Højlund recalled, referencing a period where he made history as the first Dane ever to be named Premier League Player of the Month after scoring in six consecutive games.

For now, Højlund’s focus is firmly on the international duty ahead. He will be battling for a starting spot as Denmark begins its 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with crucial matches against Scotland and Greece, hoping to carry a new sense of confidence onto the pitch.
