Health Agency Urges Nigerians to Take Preventive Measures Against Virus Spread
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has raised the alarm over an increased risk of Chikungunya virus outbreaks in parts of the country. In a public health advisory issued on Friday, the agency warned that recent reports suggest a growing threat, particularly in states where Aedes mosquitoes—the primary carriers of the virus—are thriving due to heavy rainfall.
Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne disease similar to dengue and Zika, causes sudden high fever, intense joint pain, headaches, muscle aches, fatigue, and rashes. While deaths are rare, the NCDC cautioned that some patients may suffer prolonged joint discomfort, impacting daily life.
With Nigeria’s tropical climate and ongoing rainy season creating ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, the NCDC urged citizens to take immediate precautions. These include sleeping under insecticide-treated nets, using mosquito repellents, wearing protective clothing, and clearing stagnant water around homes—common mosquito breeding sites.
Healthcare workers were also advised to be vigilant, particularly when treating patients with fever and joint pain in high-risk areas, and to report suspected cases swiftly to authorities. The NCDC reassured the public that it is collaborating with state governments and partners to enhance surveillance, lab testing, and emergency response efforts.
“Preventing mosquito bites remains our strongest defense against Chikungunya,” the agency emphasized, calling for community-wide action to curb the spread. As cases rise globally, the advisory serves as a timely reminder for Nigerians to stay alert and adopt preventive measures.
