Striker Suffers Multiple Broken Bones, Faces Likely Surgery
Hungarian forward Barnabas Varga is in stable condition after being stretchered off the pitch following a collision in Sunday’s Euro 2024 match against Scotland. The Hungarian Football Federation confirmed the news, and Varga’s club, Ferencvaros, later announced that he had suffered multiple broken bones and will “most likely” undergo surgery.
The incident occurred during a mid-air clash with Scotland’s goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, which led to a seven-minute stoppage in play. Varga, who also suffered a concussion, received immediate medical attention as his teammates, visibly distressed, helped bring the stretcher onto the field.
Ferencvaros shared an update on social media, stating, “Multiple bones broke in the face of Varga Barnabas during the collision, and he also suffered a concussion. He will most likely undergo surgery. He is spending the night in the hospital in Stuttgart.”
A screen was set up around Varga as he received treatment on the field. His condition has been closely monitored, with the Hungarian Football Federation confirming, “Barnabas Varga’s condition is stable. Our player is currently in a hospital in Stuttgart. We will inform you immediately if there is any news about his status.”
Despite the unsettling incident, Hungary managed to secure a 1-0 victory over Scotland with Kevin Csoboth scoring in the 10th minute of stoppage time. Csoboth celebrated by holding up Varga’s jersey, showing solidarity with his injured teammate. After the match, the Hungary squad gathered on the pitch behind captain Dominik Szoboszlai, who wore Varga’s jersey back-to-front in support.
Hungary midfielder Callum Styles confirmed that Varga was conscious after the injury. “We don’t want to ever see that on a football pitch, but thankfully he is conscious now, and hopefully we do it all for him,” Styles told beIN Sports.
Hungary’s coach, Marco Rossi, shared his concern and relief after the game. “In that moment, I did not realize immediately how serious it was, but when I saw the players call the doctors, I started to be worried. Everybody was really worried. But when Barnie left the pitch, he was already awake. He was OK, so this is very good. The guy is healthy. He could be no more available for the rest of the tournament, but the most important thing is he is healthy.”
