Arsenal legend reveals his transfer wish for former Brighton duo, as finance expert disputes Caicedo’s “modest” wage claims
Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has revealed he wanted his former club to sign both Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo when they were at Brighton, before the midfielders joined Liverpool and Chelsea respectively.
The former Gunners star made the admission even as his old club leads the Premier League with their current squad. “When Caicedo was at Brighton, I wanted Arsenal to sign him and Mac Allister together,” Petit told JeffBet.
Petit praised both players’ development since their big moves, noting that “Mac Allister has gone on to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and won the trophy last year, Caicedo is now one of the best, too.”
The Frenchman particularly highlighted Caicedo’s potential at Chelsea, suggesting the Ecuadorian “can reach the same level of N’Golo Kante and Claude Makelele,” though emphasizing that winning major trophies would be essential for legendary status.
Meanwhile, football finance expert Stefan Borson challenged narratives about Chelsea’s wage structure, specifically regarding Caicedo’s compensation. “The idea that Caicedo signed for Chelsea in a competitive situation for £115m and was paid a wage anything other than at the very high end of Premier League wages is completely unbelievable,” Borson told Football Insider.
The finance expert dismissed claims about Chelsea’s unique contract approach, noting that incentive-based deals are common across football and that Chelsea’s recent successes would have triggered numerous performance bonuses throughout the squad.
