Impeached Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa Declares Return to Office, Claims Removal Was Illegal

Obasa Reclaims Position with Armed Security, Sparks Controversy Over Legitimacy of Impeachment

In a dramatic turn of events, Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, announced on Thursday that he has resumed his role as the leader of the parliament. Obasa made the declaration after returning to the Assembly complex accompanied by armed security operatives, signaling his determination to reclaim his position.

“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa stated firmly, challenging the legitimacy of his removal.

Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, by lawmakers who accused him of misappropriation of funds. At the time of his impeachment, Obasa was in the United States, leaving his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, to step in as the acting Speaker. Meranda was subsequently sworn in to lead the Assembly in Obasa’s absence.

However, upon his return to Nigeria, Obasa contested his removal, arguing that the impeachment process did not follow due process. He maintained that his ousting was unconstitutional and vowed to fight to retain his position.

The presence of armed security personnel during Obasa’s return has added a layer of tension to the unfolding political drama. Critics have questioned the use of force, while supporters of Obasa have rallied behind him, insisting that his reinstatement is a matter of justice and due process.

The Lagos State House of Assembly now finds itself in a precarious situation, with two individuals—Obasa and Meranda—laying claim to the Speaker’s seat. The standoff has raised concerns about potential disruptions to legislative activities and the broader implications for governance in Lagos State.

As the controversy deepens, all eyes are on the Assembly to see how the conflict will be resolved. Will Obasa’s return be upheld, or will Meranda retain her position as Speaker? The coming days are likely to be pivotal in determining the outcome of this high-stakes political battle.

For now, Obasa’s bold declaration has reignited debates about accountability, due process, and the rule of law in Nigeria’s political landscape. The situation serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges that often accompany leadership transitions in the country’s democratic institutions.
