Injury Blow for Chelsea as Striker Liam Delap Sidelined for Weeks

Manager Enzo Maresca confirms a growing injury crisis threatens to derail the Blues’ positive start to the season.

Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday was marred by a significant setback, as young striker Liam Delap suffered a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him out of action for weeks.

The 21-year-old went down clutching his thigh just 13 minutes into the match at Stamford Bridge. After receiving brief attention on the pitch, he was unable to continue and walked directly down the tunnel, a clear sign of the severity of the issue.

Manager Enzo Maresca confirmed the bad news after the final whistle, stating, “The injury doesn’t look good. He was at full speed, hamstring, so that requires weeks.” This development compounds a growing injury crisis for the Blues, who are already without key attacker Cole Palmer due to a groin issue and have lost defender Levi Colwill for most of the season with a serious knee injury.

The absence of Delap, who joined from Manchester City this summer, leaves a gap in Chelsea’s attacking options. When asked if the club would now dip into the transfer market for a new striker, Maresca hinted it was a possibility, noting, “When you have two strikers, it is enough. When one of them is injured for weeks, it is probably not enough.”

Despite the frustration, Maresca expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance and their seven-point haul from the first three games. “I’m very happy,” he said. “The second half, we were very good on the ball… We dominated.” However, the specter of injuries now looms large over the club’s early-season momentum.
