Record signing takes part in full training, offering Reds a major boost ahead of Champions League opener, but midfielder Curtis Jones remains absent.
Liverpool fans received a tantalizing glimpse of the future as record-breaking signing Alexander Isak was put through his paces in training on Tuesday, strongly suggesting he could make his long-awaited debut against Atletico Madrid.
The Swedish striker, who joined from Newcastle United for £125 million, was rested during Sunday’s narrow win over Burnley. Instead, the focus has been on building his fitness after he missed a full pre-season with his former club.
His presence at the AXA Training Centre has fueled anticipation that manager Arne Slot will hand him his first minutes in the famous red shirt during Wednesday’s European night at Anfield. Slot had previously hinted at this possibility, stating Isak would be ready to play “45 minutes as a minimum” in one of the two upcoming games.
The news wasn’t all positive, however, as midfielder Curtis Jones was once again absent. He continues to recover from an injury sustained last month against Arsenal.
There was a positive sight for fans, though, as Alexis Mac Allister participated fully in training despite being substituted at halftime against Burnley with an ankle concern. The session also included promising young talents Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni, and Jayden Danns, while Federico Chiesa trained despite being ineligible for the Champions League group stage.
Explaining his careful approach with Isak, Slot emphasized the need for patience: “We got him from Newcastle in a state where his pre-season is going to start now… We don’t believe that throwing him in for a few minutes is the way to build him up.” This suggests Isak’s involvement, while likely, will be carefully managed as he builds towards full match sharpness.
