Italian Journalist Urges Joshua Zirkzee to Join AC Milan on Loan After Struggles at Manchester United

The young striker has faced mounting pressure and criticism after a tough start at Old Trafford.

An Italian journalist has advised Manchester United’s summer signing Joshua Zirkzee to consider a loan move to AC Milan during the winter transfer window, following a difficult start to his career at the Premier League club. Zirkzee, 23, scored the winning goal on his Premier League debut but has failed to register a goal or assist in nine matches since.

Zirkzee joined Manchester United from Bologna for a fee exceeding his £34 million release clause, though the deal included favorable payment terms. However, the Dutch striker has found it challenging to make an impact, similar to what happened with Rasmus Hojlund last year, joining a club in need of instant results and burdened with high expectations.

Pundits have not been kind in their assessment of Zirkzee’s early performances, with Dutch football legend Ruud Gullit criticizing his decision to join a “club that has so many problems” rather than focusing on his performances. Italian journalist Carlo Pellegati went further, claiming Zirkzee has become an “uncomfortable player” at United, suggesting he joined for financial reasons rather than footballing ambition.

“They don’t even want to see Zirkzee in Manchester anymore,” Pellegati said, adding that Zirkzee “played terribly” in United’s recent match against Aston Villa. He also argued that the young striker had indicated his lack of readiness for the Premier League before his move, expressing a preference for Milan instead.

Pellegati has now urged AC Milan to pursue a loan deal for Zirkzee in January. “Zirkzee should be taken on loan in January. They’ll give him to you,” he said. “With an attack featuring [Christian] Pulisic, [Rafael] Leao, Zirkzee, and [Alvaro] Morata, we would return to San Siro to have fun. Milan fans would regain their enthusiasm.”

Former West Ham forward Paolo Di Canio echoed Pellegati’s sentiment, advising Zirkzee to seek a loan move to Milan. Di Canio noted that United’s recent transfer decisions, including Zirkzee’s, have not panned out as expected, suggesting the Premier League may not suit Zirkzee’s playing style.

As the winter transfer window approaches, Zirkzee may find himself at a crossroads, with growing calls for him to seek opportunities elsewhere to regain form and confidence.
