Jadon Sancho Holds Out for Chelsea Move as Manchester United Push for Raheem Sterling Swap

Sancho’s Reluctance to Join Juventus Could Impact United’s Transfer Plans

Manchester United is intensifying its efforts to sign Raheem Sterling before the transfer window closes, with Jadon Sancho’s preference for a move to Chelsea playing a key role in the ongoing negotiations. Despite reports of a deal between United and Juventus for Sancho, the 24-year-old winger has not yet agreed to the move, as he remains hopeful of securing a transfer to Chelsea.

The Red Devils have been highly active in the transfer market this summer, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe leading a squad overhaul aimed at restoring United to its former glory. Having already secured four new signings—Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui—United is now looking to finalize a fifth signing, Manuel Ugarte, while also exploring additional transfer opportunities.

One of the most talked-about potential deals is a swap involving Sancho and Sterling. United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has been orchestrating the move to bring the 82-cap England international to Old Trafford. Sterling has reportedly given the green light to the transfer, provided all parties can agree on the complex terms of the deal.

However, the situation became more complicated when it was reported that Juventus had reached a full agreement with Manchester United to sign Sancho on loan, with a mandatory purchase option next summer. Despite this, Sancho has not approved the move, as he continues to favor a switch to Chelsea. This has kept the possibility of a high-profile swap between the clubs alive as the transfer deadline approaches.

If Sancho does eventually choose Juventus, United may still pursue a loan deal for Sterling, though the player’s £325,000-a-week wages pose a significant hurdle. United is reportedly operating under a one-in, one-out policy to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The club would need Chelsea to cover a portion of Sterling’s wages or for the player to accept a significant pay cut for a permanent transfer to go through.

Graeme Bailey, a journalist familiar with the situation, explained the complexities of the deal, noting that United’s interest in Sterling is not solely dependent on Sancho’s departure. “United want Sancho out, Chelsea want Sterling out—it’s a nice fit but not necessarily one without the other,” Bailey said.

As the transfer window nears its close, Manchester United remains determined to strengthen its squad, with Raheem Sterling at the center of their plans. Whether or not Sancho’s desired move to Chelsea materializes, the Red Devils are poised to make a final push for the former Manchester City star.
