Jadon Sancho Shines in Europa Conference League Final as Chelsea Face Decision on His Future

Winger’s goal caps strong loan spell, but Chelsea must decide whether to trigger £25m permanent deal

Jadon Sancho gave Chelsea a timely reminder of his quality with a goal in their 4-1 Europa Conference League final triumph over Real Betis on Wednesday—but his future at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain.

The Manchester United loanee, who joined Chelsea in a temporary deal last summer, came off the bench to net the Blues’ third goal, capping a strong individual season that has seen him contribute five goals and ten assists. Chelsea now face a crucial decision: trigger their £25m obligation to sign him permanently or pay United a £5m fee to walk away from the agreement.

Manager Enzo Maresca remained coy about Sancho’s future after the match, telling reporters: “I said yesterday in the press conference—from now on, we’ll sit with the club and decide what happens next year.” He did, however, acknowledge the winger’s impact: “If we finish fourth, it’s also because of Jadon. If we win tonight, it’s also because of Jadon. It’s normal in a season to have ups and downs—that’s part of the game.”

Cole Backs Sancho to Stay

Chelsea legend Joe Cole made his stance clear, urging the club to keep the 25-year-old. “I think Jadon is a really great player, and he’s done well,” Cole said before the final. “He’s been rotated in and out, but I want to see him playing. You want a player like that in your squad.”

After the match, Cole doubled down: “Yes, I do think he’s earned a permanent move. This is a kid who was a superstar at Dortmund. It didn’t work at United, but he’s got his career back on track at Chelsea—and I think there’s more to come.”

Antony’s Struggles Continue

While Sancho enjoyed a triumphant night, fellow United loanee Antony endured a difficult final for Betis. The Brazilian, who has impressed in La Liga with nine goals and five assists since January, was largely anonymous against Chelsea.

Former Blues defender Frank Leboeuf didn’t hold back in his criticism: “Today, I saw the ghost that was playing for Manchester United. The only thing he did was pick fights with Enzo Fernandez. He has to avoid English football—it doesn’t suit him.”

What’s Next for Sancho?

With Chelsea set to deliberate over Sancho’s future in the coming days, the winger has at least ended his season on a high. Whether he remains in blue or returns to Old Trafford, his resurgence at Chelsea has proven he still has plenty to offer at the highest level.

For now, the ball is in Chelsea’s court—and Sancho has given them plenty to think about.
