Liverpool Legend Urges Players to Rethink Joining the Club as Chelsea’s Spending Nears £1.3 Billion
Jamie Carragher has delivered a scathing critique of Chelsea’s transfer policy after the club agreed to sign João Félix and is reportedly closing in on another deal with a Liverpool player. The former Liverpool defender urged potential targets to “stop signing for the club,” labeling Chelsea’s transfer approach as chaotic and misguided.
Chelsea opened their season with a 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City, a result that highlighted the gap between them and the league’s elite despite a significant investment in the squad. Since being taken over by the BlueCo consortium two years ago, Chelsea has spent an eye-watering £1.3 billion on 44 players, with Félix’s impending return set to push that total even higher.
Félix, who previously had a loan spell at Stamford Bridge, is expected to sign a multi-year contract with the club, with personal terms reportedly agreed and a medical scheduled. Meanwhile, Conor Gallagher is set to move in the opposite direction to Atlético Madrid after being informed by manager Enzo Maresca that he would only be a squad player this season.
Carragher, speaking on Monday Night Football, expressed his disbelief at Chelsea’s relentless recruitment strategy and questioned why any player would choose to join the club under the current circumstances.
“Chelsea have just got to stop buying players and players have just got to stop signing for Chelsea,” Carragher said. “I don’t know why, as a player, I would look at that Chelsea project and think I would sign. The only reason you would sign is because your agent might say, ‘We’re getting a seven-year deal on big money. That’s guaranteed money for seven years.’
Carragher went on to criticize the lack of a clear plan at Chelsea, suggesting that the constant influx of players has created a chaotic environment. “João Félix. Tell me, where is he going to play? They signed [Pedro] Neto a week ago, they’ve already got Cole Palmer. Where are you going to play Enzo Fernandez, a £100m player who plays at No. 10? Where are you going to play [Christopher] Nkunku?”
He also raised concerns about how Chelsea’s bloated squad could impact team dynamics and training sessions. “Where are these people [getting changed]? If you’ve got 40 players, how are you all in one dressing room? How are you putting a training session on?”
Despite Carragher’s concerns, Chelsea is reportedly still pursuing further signings, including Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. Talks for Osimhen are ongoing, but a deal is not yet close, while Gomez, currently Liverpool’s fourth-choice center-back, could be on the move if the Reds secure a replacement.
As Chelsea continues its aggressive recruitment drive, Carragher’s comments highlight growing skepticism about the club’s transfer strategy and whether it can translate into on-field success.
