Liverpool legend criticizes Spurs’ mentality and performance following 4-0 Carabao Cup semi-final loss at Anfield.
Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher delivered a scathing assessment of Tottenham Hotspur after their humiliating 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg, claiming Spurs “never surprise you and win against the odds.” The loss at Anfield on Thursday night saw Ange Postecoglou’s side crash out of the competition despite holding a 1-0 aggregate lead heading into the match.
Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, didn’t mince his words as he tore into Tottenham’s performance, suggesting even lower-league side Accrington Stanley posed a greater challenge to Liverpool in the FA Cup earlier this season. He described Spurs’ midfield trio as a “disgrace” and questioned the club’s ability to deliver in high-stakes games.
“It was never in doubt before the game,” Carragher said. “It’s Tottenham. When did they ever win a big game? When did they ever go anywhere and surprise you and win against the odds? The odds were massively in Liverpool’s favor. They’re at Anfield, they’re the best team in the country, and possibly in Europe right now. It’s not just this Spurs team—they never shock you and do something extraordinary.”
Carragher struggled to recall the last time Tottenham pulled off a significant upset, eventually referencing their dramatic Champions League semi-final victory over Ajax in 2019, a match where he felt they were “very lucky” after being outplayed for large portions.
“Whenever Tottenham go into a big game, they never believe they’re going to win,” he added. “Not one of those Tottenham fans tonight would have believed. I’m not saying this to make a headline. Accrington Stanley, with Liverpool not even fielding their best team, gave them more trouble than Tottenham did tonight.”
The criticism didn’t stop with Carragher. Former Premier League striker Dion Dublin, covering the match for BBC Radio 5 Live, echoed similar sentiments, pointing to the lackluster body language of the Spurs players.
“Fully deserved,” Dublin said. “I’m pretty sure Arne Slot [Liverpool’s manager] told his team at half-time to go through the gears. They didn’t have to go all out, but they did enough. Spurs were completely off it. If I were a Spurs fan, I’d be very disappointed that my team didn’t hang on to what they had. I didn’t like the body language from the Spurs players—they were just jogging around. Liverpool made it look like a training game.”
The defeat leaves Tottenham facing yet another season without silverware, while Liverpool march on to the Carabao Cup final, further cementing their status as one of Europe’s elite teams. For Spurs, the questions about their mentality and ability to compete in crucial moments continue to grow louder.
