After sharing a photo with Grammy awards that some fans interpreted as a jab at Ayra Starr, Nigerian singer Jaywon has issued a public apology, clarifying his support for his fellow artist. The recent Grammy nominations announcement saw Ayra Starr, despite her standout performances this year, not receiving a nomination—a surprising outcome that quickly became a topic of discussion.
In the wake of the announcement, Jaywon, who had previously engaged in online disputes with Ayra Starr, posted an image of himself holding two Grammy awards. Many interpreted this as a subtle dig, sparking backlash and criticism.
In response, Jaywon took to social media to express his regret and clarify his intentions. He emphasized his respect for Ayra Starr, describing her as “one of the best female vocalists Africa has” and affirming that he has always been a fan of her music.
“If you see Ayra Starr, tell her I’m sorry she wasn’t nominated for this year’s Grammys. I’m a huge fan of her music, and I believe she’s one of the best female vocalists Africa has. On this side, we don’t pull people down. We elevate, not just for today, but for the future,” Jaywon wrote, concluding with the Yoruba phrase “Ola Inu Kan,” a wish for shared prosperity.
