In an emotional interview, the returning striker addresses his injury hell and the constant exit rumours, while Arteta promises a key role for the “unpredictable” forward.
In a heartfelt address to the speculation surrounding his career, Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus has firmly shut down talks of a January exit, declaring it “doesn’t make sense” to leave now as he fights his way back from a devastating knee injury. However, the Brazilian has named Brazilian giants Palmeiras, his first club, as the most likely destination when his time in North London eventually concludes.
Jesus’s journey at Arsenal has been marred by fitness struggles, having missed a staggering 82 matches since his £45 million move from Manchester City in 2022. His latest setback, a torn ACL suffered 10 months ago, saw the club invest heavily in a new striker, Viktor Gyokeres, this summer, leading to widespread rumours that Jesus could be sold.
But the 28-year-old is having none of it. “Coming back from such a complex surgery, it doesn’t make sense for me to leave Arsenal now,” Jesus told Brazilian outlet Somos Fanaticos. He expressed frustration with the media chatter, lamenting, “There are journalists who are talking without any basis whatsoever.”
While committing his immediate future to the Gunners, Jesus did offer a glimpse into his long-term plans, confirming a sentimental return to Palmeiras is on the cards. “When I feel it’s time to return to Palmeiras, I’ll decide that with Arsenal,” he stated, framing it as a future discussion rather than an imminent move.
This public show of commitment has been backed by his manager. Mikel Arteta, speaking about reintegrating the forward, was full of praise for Jesus’s fighting spirit.
“[He is] a player that is very unpredictable, full of energy, super competitive,” Arteta said. “The level of hunger and desire that he’s going to bring to the team is going to be amazing. I’m thrilled to have him; I think he’s going to add something extra to the team that we don’t have.”
With injuries still affecting his attacking options, Arteta sees Jesus not as a dispensable asset, but as a vital “option” for the gruelling season ahead. For now, the message from both player and manager is clear: Gabriel Jesus is focused on winning his place back and making an impact for Arsenal.
