English Midfielder Reportedly Pushing for Monaco Move as Uncertainty Grows
Jordan Henderson’s future at Ajax appears increasingly uncertain, with reports suggesting the former Liverpool captain has been stripped of the armband amid mounting transfer speculation.
The 34-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move to AS Monaco, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting that the French club is “closing in” on a deal to sign him. Henderson is said to have agreed to a contract running until the summer of 2026, paving the way for a permanent exit from the Dutch giants just months after his arrival.
Ajax Strips Henderson of Captaincy
Despite the swirling transfer rumors, Henderson was still included in Ajax’s starting XI for their UEFA Europa League clash against Galatasaray on Thursday night. He played 77 minutes before being substituted in the 2-1 victory, but notably, he did not wear the captain’s armband. Instead, veteran goalkeeper Remko Pasveer was handed the responsibility.
When questioned about the situation, Ajax manager Francesco Farioli avoided giving a direct answer. “I’m not going to speak about the market,” he said. “I hear something else every hour. If I start to follow everything, I will start getting mad.”
Tensions Rising as Henderson Pushes for Exit
According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Henderson is reportedly prepared to take drastic action if Ajax blocks his move to Monaco. The midfielder is said to be threatening to refuse to play should the club prevent his transfer, leaving Ajax officials “astonished” by his determination to leave.
Amid the growing unrest, former Ajax figures have criticized Henderson’s handling of the situation. One club source reportedly remarked, “Be a man and stand up. Right now, you get all this speculation, and you create unrest. It could have been much calmer if he had just worn the [captain’s] armband.”
With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Henderson’s future at Ajax hangs in the balance. Whether he forces a move to Monaco or remains in Amsterdam under difficult circumstances, it’s clear that his time with the Dutch club has taken an unexpected and turbulent turn.
