Fenerbahce Coach Laments Officiating as His Team Holds United in Dramatic Europa League Clash

In a fiery post-match interview, Fenerbahce head coach Jose Mourinho voiced his frustration with referee Clement Turpin after his side’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League. Mourinho, visibly upset on the touchline, was sent off after protesting what he believed was a clear penalty when Fenerbahce’s Bright Osayi-Samuel was brought down in the box by United’s Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte.

Speaking to the media, Mourinho expressed disbelief at Turpin’s response. “The referee told me he saw both the incident in the box and my behavior on the touchline simultaneously,” Mourinho said, adding, “It’s amazing. That’s why he’s one of the best referees in the world.”

Reflecting on the match, Mourinho praised his team’s performance against a challenging Premier League side. “We were fantastic; if we play like this in the Turkish league, we’ll destroy every team. We had injuries, players out of the Europa list, and were forced to make do with makeshift positions,” Mourinho commented, adding that United were “fortunate” to leave Istanbul with a point.

Mourinho also highlighted the standout performance of United goalkeeper Andre Onana, who made an incredible double save to keep Fenerbahce at bay. “Onana saved the result,” said Mourinho. “He made two incredible saves in ten seconds. I’d say he was the most decisive player for United.”

United coach Erik ten Hag faced scrutiny for positioning Noussair Mazraoui as a makeshift No. 10 in place of suspended Bruno Fernandes. But Mourinho defended the tactic, noting, “Mazraoui has experience playing that role under Ten Hag at Ajax, so I understand the decision.”

Mourinho, whose Fenerbahce contract runs until 2026, hinted at a potential Premier League return once his tenure concludes. “Maybe a bottom English club will need a coach in two years. I’ll be ready to go,” he said, before ending the interview on that note.
