Jose Mourinho Blasts Referee as Fenerbahce Crash Out of Europa League in Penalty Heartbreak

Mourinho Questions Officiating and Hints at Repercussions from Past Controversies After Dramatic Exit to Rangers

Jose Mourinho did not hold back in his criticism of referee Espen Eskas after Fenerbahce were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League by Rangers in a tense penalty shootout. The Turkish side fought valiantly to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit, with Sebastian Szymanski scoring twice to force extra time, but ultimately fell short in the dramatic finale.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Mourinho took aim at Eskas, describing him as “arrogant” and suggesting that decisions against his team this season might be linked to his infamous outburst during the 2023 Europa League final. The Portuguese manager, who served a four-match ban for confronting referee Anthony Taylor after Roma’s defeat to Sevilla last year, hinted at a possible vendetta against him and his team.

“The referee and the VAR decided that we should go to penalties,” Mourinho said. “The fourth official was a nice guy, not arrogant like the referee. He was trying to do his job and keep our bench calm. I was the only one calm because everyone else, especially those in front of the laptops, found it difficult to control their emotions.”

Mourinho then raised concerns about whether his team’s misfortunes this season were a consequence of his past actions. “I hope that everything that has happened to my team since day one this season is not a consequence of the Budapest final,” he said. “I hope it’s just random. But since that final and my suspension, we’ve had so many decisions go against us. We missed out on the Champions League because of a penalty in the 120th minute against Lille, and we didn’t win against Manchester United despite a clear penalty that everyone saw.”

Despite the disappointment, Mourinho praised his team’s performance, insisting they were the better side over the two legs. “We were the best team on the pitch, by far,” he declared. “Not by a close margin, by far. We deserved to win over 90 minutes, and we deserved to win over 120 minutes. In the first leg, I was honest and said we made mistakes and deserved to lose. But in this match, I have to be honest and say we were the best team by far.”

Fenerbahce’s Europa League journey may be over, but Mourinho’s fiery post-match comments have once again thrust him into the spotlight, reigniting debates about refereeing standards and the lingering impact of his past controversies.
